Selenium is a trace mineral your body builds into a handful of critical enzymes — as a special amino acid called selenocysteine, which sits at the enzyme's active site. The most relevant of these is glutathione peroxidase (GPx), the enzyme that lets glutathione do its job. GPx uses glutathione to convert hydrogen peroxide and damaging lipid peroxides into harmless water — and it simply cannot function without selenium at its core.
One honest clarification, since it's often blurred: selenium doesn't really increase how much glutathione you make. It powers how glutathione is used. Glutathione is the ammunition; selenium builds the firing mechanism. So the accurate framing isn't "selenium boosts glutathione creation" — it's "selenium lets the glutathione you've built actually disarm oxidative damage." Miss it, and you've stockpiled ammunition with no trigger.

A couple is a food source; a handful daily on top of a supplement is a fast route to overshooting. If you eat Brazil nuts regularly, you may not need to supplement at all.
Selenium's benefit is mostly a deficiency-correction story: it helps clearly when you're low, and the returns flatten — or reverse — once you're replete. Large trials of high-dose selenium in already-sufficient people found no benefit for some outcomes and even a signal of increased type-2-diabetes risk. So the goal is adequacy, not maximization.
Also — check what you're already getting. Many multivitamins and some GlyNAC or antioxidant formulas already include selenium. Stacking a standalone dose on top of those is the most common way people drift toward the upper limit without realizing it. For your purposes, the point is simply to make sure GPx isn't starved of its cofactor while you're building glutathione — a modest, adequate intake does that.
