The most common reason people do crunches is to flatten their belly. It's also the one thing crunches can't do. Fat and muscle are two separate layers, and working the muscle doesn't touch the fat on top of it. But core training is genuinely worth doing — for a completely different reason.
It feels obvious: if you want to lose belly fat, work the belly. So people do endless crunches, sit-ups, and ab-machine sets, waiting for the midsection to melt. It doesn't — and not because they aren't working hard enough. It's because the whole premise is wrong. You cannot burn fat from a specific spot by exercising the muscle beneath it.
