Systemic vs Local: Two Ways to Reach the Same Enzyme

Complex IV is in every cell of your body — so the real question isn't whether a tool boosts it, but where it can reach. Methylene blue floods everywhere; red light only touches what it shines on. Understanding that one difference tells you why a pill and a cap aren't interchangeable — and why, for the brain, a cap beats a body panel every time.

Start from the fact that reframes the whole comparison: Complex IV is everywhere. Every mitochondrion, in every cell, in every organ, has it. So when two tools both "boost Complex IV," they're aiming at the same enzyme — the difference between them is entirely about delivery: how the boost actually gets to the tissue. And there are two fundamentally different delivery models. One travels through your bloodstream to reach everything at once. The other is a beam of light that only affects what it physically lands on. That single distinction decides which tool to use for which goal.

For the brain: cap vs. whole-body panel

So which red-light device reaches your brain? Here the shape matters enormously, and the answer is clear: a cap beats a body panel for the brain, easily.

A whole-body panel is a body tool. It's pointed at your torso, and even if you faced it, a panel radiating from a distance loses most of its intensity before it arrives (light falls off sharply with distance) — and then it would still have to get through your skull. So a panel does a lot for a large area of body skin and muscle, and essentially nothing for your brain.

A cap does the opposite: it ignores the body entirely and puts all its light in direct contact with your scalp, aimed right at the one place you care about. No distance loss, correct location. For the brain, that's the right geometry — the panel isn't even in the running.

The honest catch — the skull

Even for a cap, reaching brain tissue is hard. The skull absorbs and scatters light, so only a fraction of what leaves the LEDs actually reaches the brain. Two things decide whether enough survives: the wavelength (near-infrared ~850 nm penetrates deepest — red ~660 nm barely gets past the scalp) and the power density (you need enough starting intensity that a meaningful amount survives the trip through bone). This is why a cap's published irradiance matters so much for brain use — and why a cap that hides that number is a gamble for the brain.

Hair is easy; brain is hard — same cap

Here's the practical asymmetry. For hair, the follicles sit right there in the scalp — the light barely has to travel, so even a modest cap works and the power spec matters little. For brain, the light must survive the skull, so power density and the 850 nm band are everything. That's why a cheap hair cap is a fine hair buy but an uncertain brain buy: same device, but the brain is asking far more of it.
