The Floating Number: How to Tell a Measurement from a Slogan

A claim arrives with a number attached, and the number does the persuading. Here is a test that costs nothing and works on almost everything: watch what the number is attached to. A real measurement is welded to exactly one thing. A slogan drifts — and once you see it drift, you know it was never measured at all.

This piece is a method, not a takedown — but it needs a specimen, and dry fasting supplies an unusually clean one. The famous claim is “one day of dry fasting equals three days of water fasting.” Track that across the ecosystem and you’ll find it attached, at various times, to water weight, to “toxins,” to healing, to autophagy, to the number of bad cells removed, and to gene regulation. Six different nouns. One unchanging ratio. Nothing in biology behaves that way — and that observation, all by itself, is enough to know the number’s provenance before you check a single study.

Test one

Watch the noun, not the number

A measurement is a relationship between a quantity and a specific thing. “107 mL of water per 100 g of fat” measures the water yield of fat oxidation. It measures nothing else. You cannot borrow it to describe healing, or cell turnover, or gene expression — it doesn’t reach. That narrowness is not a limitation of the number. It is what makes it a number.

So when a figure fits six unrelated outcomes equally well, the explanation isn’t that it’s a profound constant. It’s that it was never bound to any of them.

The second property is the one that matters: a claim that cannot fail is not a strong claim, it’s an empty one.
The migration, traced

The earliest sourceable version says a one-day dry fast eliminates as much water weight as a three-day water fast — a claim about water, which is trivially true when you aren’t drinking any. Later retellings keep the ratio and swap the noun: now it’s 3× the autophagy, 3× the bad cells removed. Notice the direction of travel — from something measurable and boring toward something unmeasurable and thrilling. When the number stays fixed while the noun upgrades, the number is a rhetorical device, not a result.

Test two

Ask what study would have had to exist

This is the most powerful move in the toolkit, and it requires no expertise — only imagination. Don’t ask “is this true?” Ask: “what would somebody have had to do for this number to exist?” Then check whether that could plausibly have happened.

Run it on “3× the autophagy, 3× the bad cells removed.” To produce that figure you would need matched human cohorts, randomised to 72 hours dry versus 72 hours water, with serial tissue biopsies and properly quantified autophagic flux — not a proxy, actual flux measurement. And you would need an ethics board to approve randomising human beings to three days of dehydration.

Not an autophagy assay. Animal and cell-culture work including desert birds with a different kidney. Water-fasting autophagy timing largely extrapolated from cells and animals — the human kinetics are poorly characterised even here. A dry-vs-water autophagy comparison: does not exist. The number has no possible source. It was not measured badly — it was never measured. And the study that would produce it could not clear an ethics board.

There is no dry-versus-water human autophagy comparison. The number wasn’t measured badly. There was never an apparatus that could have produced it.
Why this test is so useful

It converts a question you can’t answer (“is this biology correct?”) into one you can (“would that experiment have been possible?”). You don’t need to know anything about autophagy to notice that nobody randomised humans to three-day dehydration with serial biopsies. Most unmeasurable claims die instantly on this test, and it costs you fifteen seconds.

Test three

Ask whether the mechanism has a sensor

Now the deeper check. For an input to change a biological output, something has to detect it. There has to be a receptor, a sensor, a pathway — a physical means by which the signal is read.

Autophagy is governed by mTORC1, and mTORC1’s inputs are well mapped: amino acids (leucine, via Sestrin2/GATOR/Rag GTPases), energy charge (AMP:ATP, via AMPK), insulin and growth factors (via PI3K/Akt), and oxygen (via REDD1/HIF-1α). Every one has a named sensor and a traced pathway.

Hydration status is not on the list. There is no known hydration receptor feeding mTORC1 — and more tellingly, nobody has proposed one. The claim doesn’t have a disputed mechanism. It has no mechanism.

Nobody has found one. More tellingly: nobody has even proposed one.
The sensor test. For dehydration to triple autophagic flux, a cell would need some way to know it was dehydrated and to route that information to mTORC1. No such sensor is known, and none has been hypothesised. That’s a different and much weaker position than “the mechanism is contested” — the mechanism is absent.
Test four

Spot the real phenomenon borrowed as a costume

The most sophisticated move in health marketing isn’t inventing something false — it’s standing next to something true. Consider: “fasting resets your bad DNA and turns off bad genes — and dry fasting does it even better.”

Unpack it. Fasting changes gene expression — true, well-documented, real. “Reset your DNA” — not a thing; your sequence doesn’t reset, and expression shifts are transient and revert on refeeding. “Turn off bad genes” — genes aren’t good or bad, and expression isn’t a light switch you flip permanently. “Dry does it even better” — the unsupported multiplier, bolted onto a second noun, exactly as before.

The structure is: one true statement, one meaningless phrase that sounds like it, and then the claim you were meant to buy — riding the credibility of the first. The real phenomenon is a costume. It never gets asked to support the weight.

A related move: the survival response as a benefit

“We have fifty genes that protect us against dehydration — so dehydration must be beneficial!” We also have exquisite machinery for surviving haemorrhage: vasoconstriction, RAAS activation, fluid shifts, clotting cascades. That doesn’t make bloodletting healthy. A survival response is evidence that the thing was dangerous enough to evolve a defence against — not evidence that it’s good for you. Hormesis isn’t “any stressor we can survive.” It’s a stressor producing a net adaptive gain, which is an empirical claim that needs its own evidence. Exercise has it. Fasting has it. “We survive it” is not it.

Test five

Count the independent failures

Any single objection can be a quibble. A number is off, a study is small, a mechanism is unclear — real science is full of that, and dismissing something over one flaw is its own error. What matters is whether the failures are independent, and whether they point the same way.

Convergence. Five failures of five different kinds — an arithmetic impossibility, a broken animal-to-human bridge, an inverted physiological claim, inverted mitigation advice, and an unmeasurable headline figure. They’re not restatements of one another; each could have come out fine independently. All five landing the same way is not bad luck. It’s a verdict.
The honest limit

What this does and doesn’t prove

Now the discipline that separates an audit from a hit piece — and the standard has to apply here too, or none of it means anything.

This does not prove dry fasting does nothing. It proves the case for it is unsupported: the mechanism offered is arithmetically impossible, the evidence offered doesn’t exist, and the headline number was never measured. Whether dehydration produces some other effect through some pathway nobody has proposed is unstudied — not disproven. Those are genuinely different verdicts, and collapsing them would be committing the same sin in the opposite direction.

Which yields the honest position: a claim with no mechanism, no evidence, and a known cost is a bad bet — not a proven zero. That’s less satisfying than “debunked,” and it’s the only version that survives its own standard.

The toolkit

Five questions for any claim

Test 1

What is the number attached to?

Track it across retellings. If the ratio holds while the noun changes — water weight to autophagy to healing — it was never bound to any of them.

“Does this figure fit everything? Then it measures nothing.”

What study would have had to exist?

Reverse-engineer the apparatus. Name the cohorts, the comparison, the assay, the approval. Then ask whether that could plausibly have happened.

For an input to change an output, something must detect it. Ask for the receptor and the pathway. “Contested mechanism” is a real thing; no proposed mechanism is a different and much weaker thing.

Separate the true statement from the claim standing next to it. Then check whether the true part actually supports the weight being put on it — usually it was never asked to.

One is a quibble. Count the kinds — arithmetic, transfer, inversion, provenance. Independent failures converging is the strongest signal available to a non-specialist.

And the discipline that makes it honest: this shows the case is unsupported — not that the effect is zero.
