Why Your Back Rounds in a Hinge: The Hamstring Version

In a squat, tight ankles and hips make the back round. In a hinge — a deadlift or Romanian deadlift — it's the hamstrings. Same story, different limiter: when the mobility runs out, the spine rounds to make up the difference. Here's the mechanism, and how to build the readiness before you load it.

There's a companion to the squat-rounding problem, and it shows up in the hinge. When you push your hips back to deadlift or do a Romanian deadlift, your hamstrings have to lengthen to let the hips travel back. If they can't — because they're tight, or the hip won't fold far enough — you run out of range partway down. But your body still wants to reach the bar, so it finds the missing range the only other way it can: by rounding the lower back. The spine flexes to buy what the hamstrings couldn't give. It's the exact same principle as the squat, with a different muscle as the limiter — and the same conclusion: the back rounds because something upstream ran out first. The back is the victim, not the cause.

Strain in the back vs stretch in the hamstrings

There's a simple way to read what's happening in your own hinge — pay attention to where you feel it. A hinge done within your range loads the hamstrings and glutes: you feel a stretch and work in the back of the thighs and the butt. That's right. But if you feel strain or work in the lower back instead — like the back is doing the job — that's the sign the spine has started compensating for range the hamstrings couldn't provide. And here's the especially important part: if that back strain shows up even with no weight at all, it means the issue is mobility and pattern, not load. You haven't found the flat-back range yet, so the back is picking up the slack from the very first rep. That's information worth respecting, not pushing through.

Where do you feel a bodyweight hinge? Hamstrings and glutes stretching/working → you're in your range, good. Lower back straining/working → the back is compensating for missing hamstring/hip range. The goal is to feel the hinge in the hamstrings, never as strain in the lower back.

Building readiness

How to get ready to hinge — before loading it

If the hamstrings are the limiter, the answer isn't to force the hinge deeper — it's to build the mobility and groove the pattern so the range comes honestly, and to keep every rep inside the flat-back zone. In order of leverage:

Groove the pattern (neutral spine first)
Open the real limiter (gently)
Make it more forgiving while you build
The honest boundary — when this isn't a drill-it problem

Feeling back strain during a bodyweight hinge — especially for anyone with a history of back or hip problems — is a signal to stop and get assessed in person, not to drill harder toward the lift. The hinge loads the lumbar spine directly, so a back that strains under a bodyweight hinge is telling you the pattern and mobility aren't ready to protect it yet — and with any back history, forcing readiness toward a loaded hinge is a decision for a movement-focused physical therapist or sports-medicine clinician who can watch you move, not for self-programming. The RDL is also optional: there are posterior-chain options that are gentler on the back, so it's never a lift you're forced to chase. Build the pattern under professional eyes if your back is involved.
