Both are hip hinges; both build the whole back of the body. The difference comes down to one thing — where the movement starts and how much the knees bend — and understanding it hinges (literally) on one idea most people find confusing at first: how the hips travel back without bending the knees.
The conventional deadlift and the Romanian deadlift (RDL) are close cousins — both are hinges, both hammer the posterior chain (glutes, hamstrings, back). But they feel completely different and emphasize different muscles, and the reason trips people up. The whole thing rests on understanding what a hip hinge actually is — because the single most confusing question is "if I'm not bending my knees much, how do my hips go backward?" Answer that, and the difference between the two lifts becomes obvious. So let's start there.
Here's the key idea: your knee and your hip are two different joints that bend independently. You can fold deeply at your hip without your knees doing much at all. The hip is a ball-and-socket joint where your thigh bone meets your pelvis — and a "hip hinge" means your pelvis tips forward over the top of your thighs, so your torso lowers toward horizontal while your butt travels backward. All of that folding happens at the hip crease, not the knee.
What lets the hips travel back is your hamstrings lengthening. The hamstrings run from your pelvis down to below the knee, so as the pelvis tips forward and the butt goes back, they stretch — they're what "pay out the line" to let the hips move. That's why a hinge is felt so strongly in the hamstrings, and why hamstring flexibility literally determines how far your hips can travel back before your spine would be forced to round. The knees? They hold a soft, fixed bend — not locked dead straight, but not actively bending and straightening either. They set an angle and stay there while the hips do the work.
Put your hands on the crease where your thighs meet your torso. Keep your knees almost straight (soft, not locked). Now push your butt backward — like reaching your rear end toward a wall behind you — letting your chest tip forward as a counterweight. You'll feel yourself folding at that hip crease and a stretch building in your hamstrings, while your knees barely move. That's the hip hinge. The hips went back; the knees didn't bend.
Now the difference is easy: it's about where the lift starts and how much the knees join in.
Starts on the floor — every rep from a dead stop on the ground (hence "dead"-lift).
Knees bend more — you reach the floor with a combined knee-bend and hip-hinge.
Uses the quads too — driving up from the floor shares load across quads, glutes, hamstrings, and back. More of a total-body strength lift.
Reset each rep — down to the floor, dead stop, repeat.
Starts from the top — standing, usually lifted off a rack; the bar doesn't return to the floor.
Knees stay soft & fixed — a near-pure hip hinge; hips push back, bar travels to about knee/mid-shin.
Targets hamstrings & glutes — the fixed knees and deep hinge load the posterior chain in a purer, more stretched way.
Constant tension — no floor reset; the loaded hamstring stretch at the bottom is its signature.
An important correction, because it's easy to get backwards: the RDL is not more dangerous because it "uses the lower back more." In both lifts, the lower-back muscles work the same way — isometrically, holding the spine rigid and flat while the hips move. The danger in either lift is the same single thing: letting the spine round under load. Keep the flat, neutral spine, and both are safe by the same logic.
The RDL doesn't demand more back rounding — it demands more hamstring mobility and hinge control to keep that flat back at the deeper hinge. If the hamstrings are tight or the hinge isn't grooved, you can run out of hamstring range and the spine rounds to compensate (the same cascade that rounds a squat). So building the pattern first with the conventional-style lift, then adding the RDL once the hinge is solid, is sound sequencing — not because the RDL is a "back exercise," but because it's a more demanding hinge. When you do it: flat spine throughout, hinge from the hips, and go only as low as you can keep the flat back — that point is your bottom.
Both are hip hinges — the hips travel back by folding at the hip joint while the hamstrings lengthen, not by bending the knees. The conventional deadlift starts on the floor with more knee bend (whole-body, quads included); the Romanian deadlift starts standing with soft, fixed knees and a near-pure hinge (hamstring- and glute-focused, with a loaded stretch). Neither requires rounding the back — in both, the lower back works isometrically to hold the spine flat, and rounding under load is the only real danger. The RDL just asks for more hamstring mobility, so build the hinge first and add it later.
