You've trained legs faithfully — leg extensions, curls, calf raises, the abduction machine. Then one light set of deadlifts leaves your whole lower body wrecked for days. It's not a contradiction. Machines and compound lifts build two different kinds of strength, and one had been quietly missing.
Here's a genuinely confusing experience: someone trains legs hard for months on machines — leg extensions, seated curls, calf raises, the hip abduction machine — and feels strong. Then they do one modest session of deadlifts and can barely walk for three days, sore in muscles they didn't know they had. The natural reaction is "how, when I've been training legs the whole time?" The answer isn't that the machine work was wasted. It's that isolation machines and compound lifts train two different things, and if you've only done one, the other movement will find everything you've been missing. Understanding the split explains the soreness — and tells you what the deadlift was actually doing.
One joint, one muscle at a time (leg extension = quads; curl = hamstrings).
The machine stabilizes you — the seat and pads hold your body, so your stabilizers don't have to work.

Neither is "better." Machines build individual muscles well and are excellent for targeted work, safety, and loading a muscle without demanding stability — which is genuinely useful, including when you're carefully managing a joint or an issue. Compounds build the coordination and stabilization machines can't, because with a compound, the stabilizing is the exercise. The problem only arises when you assume one covers the other. It doesn't.
A deadlift loads the entire posterior chain as one coordinated system — glutes, hamstrings, adductors, spinal erectors, and the outer-hip stabilizers, all cooperating in a single pattern. Your machines trained those muscles separately and never made them work together. Coordinating the whole chain under load is a stimulus they'd never received.
On a seated machine, the seat and pads do the stabilizing. Standing with a loaded barbell, your own stabilizers — the small muscles around the hips, the deep core, the outer-hip and IT-band region — must control the weight. Those are exactly the muscles that "hadn't fired in ages," because the machines had been doing their job for them. Suddenly asked to work, they light up.
The deadlift loads the hamstrings and glutes in a lengthened, stretched position under heavy tension — a far more soreness-inducing stimulus than the shortened, guided contraction of a machine. Loaded stretch is one of the most DOMS-producing stimuli there is, especially when it's new.
You had been training legs — but almost entirely with isolated, stabilized, single-muscle machines. The deadlift was the first time you loaded the whole chain as an integrated, self-stabilized, standing system, and it found every muscle the machines had been leaving out. Same body part, completely different demand. The widespread soreness is the map of what had been missing.
The cleanest way to see the compound movements is by fundamental movement pattern — the handful of basic ways the body moves against resistance. Each pattern has a compound lift that trains it. A well-rounded program covers the patterns — a push, a pull, a squat, a hinge, and something single-leg — because together they train the whole body as coordinated systems. Machines then fill in targeted work on top. If your training has been mostly machines, adding even one or two compounds will recruit the stabilizing, coordinating strength that's been missing — which is exactly why the first exposure hits so hard.
Isolation machines and compound lifts build different things. Machines train one muscle on a supported, fixed path (the machine stabilizes you); compounds train many muscles working together while you stabilize and coordinate. So you can train legs for months on machines and still get wrecked by a deadlift — it fires the whole chain together, wakes dormant stabilizers the machines were resting, and loads muscles in a stretched position. The major compounds map to movement patterns — squat, hinge, horizontal & vertical push, horizontal & vertical pull, single-leg — and if you've only done machines, adding them finds everything you've been missing (so start light).
